EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE
"BOY NEXT DOOR" !!!
Bylli Crayone
Who is Bylli Crayone? I have been defined as the millenium cross-over artist, Controversial lyricist, Wild stage performer all that with an Image that brings new meaning to "Color".
Can you tell me a little about your background, where you were born, how you got started in the music business? Born and raised in Lawrence, MA. I have been into music all my life. DJ'ing and stuff. Cut my first demo in 1992 in N.Miami "Debonaire Productions"...Hi Claudio! I did some local shows in both Ft. Lauderdale and Lawrence and I was loving the attention so I decided to do some more!
Did you always know you wanted to be singing and doing music? Absolutely! Been writing since 5th grade, formed a band in High School and was involved with various types of community events, talent shows, etc.
Are there any other artist or producers that you admire, and why? Artists that I admire.... First, Yes, again...Ms. Cyndi Lauper. Because she is sweet and we have so much in common in our own way. Also admire Beyonce Knowles of Destinys Child (she's a strong supporter of mine)
Tell us about your current release? My album "Toyfriend" was released in July of 2001. On an Indie label that services to the Underground dance Community. 2 Big Tracks were released from that "Drop Those Panst!" and "Touch me All Over". Both went over well on the Indie music scene.
What other projects are you currently working on? The most recent project is called "Boy Next Door". It is a collection of my songs remixed for one nice dance album. including new mixes for "Touch me..." **(freestyleMusic.com remix) by Jorge Ojeda and Mike Check One. Boy Next Door is gonna be one hot dance album!!
What challenges have you been faced during your professional career? My acceptance for song writing skills. The pressure of stardom, Performing at huge events with 1,000's of eyes on me.
Do you have a mentor? I did, but no longer do, My mentor was a rep from Sony Latin he showed me the ropes, introduced me to industry insiders among other things. Now I handle on my own.....Independently
What makes your sound unique? Hmmm, I would say its unique in many ways, for one, I'm a dance artist. I don't limit myself to just one genre of dance. I do freestyle, house, merengue and reggae. And all my music is co-produced by me, my ideas have to be involved with the creative process or I simply wont like it and feel good about it.
For someone who wants to be involved in the music industry, what is the best advice could you offer them? No matter what obstacles come your way (and they will) don't listen to what the critics say, listen to your heart and do what feels right for you. Critics are just that...Critics. I have been told many things from my lyrics to my image, and you know what? I do what I feel comfortable with.
What's your opinion about dance music being a prominent force in the industry? I wish there was more dance music. the UK seems to be the place for that and the states seem to be in the dark when it comes to dance music. that's a stop on my list...The UK.
What DJ's or producers if any have helped to inspire you and your sound? Inspired me.... Well, I personally love the music mixing and production work of Junior Vasquez. I admire his style its soo unique when I hear a production in a club by Jr. I know right away that he did it.
Who would you like to work with? I would like to work with....you ready for this? I would like to work with Deborah Gibson and Jordan Knight. I do not have a good answer why off the top of my head. I just admire them for there constant GO! and I have been following there careers and wish I could be like them.
What's the best part of being an artist? Easy! The Free Clothes, Food, Hook-ups, LOL. But also, to see that you put a smile on someone's face and made there day by signing an autograph. Even though I'm not a mainstream artist, I still get acknowledged as if I was. people know my name on the street and I'll have no clue who that person is. Here's a good example: I was at another music related website and someone had posted a message about me and my music and there was a reply stating. "I've been hearing a lot about this guy Bylli Crayone, but have yet to hear his music." I totally freaked out. LOL
With the Napster controversy, how do you feel about the internet and it's advantages/ or disadvantages in the music business? I love the whole FREE Download thing, especially for Indie Artists, I think it works as an advantage for us. people can download your song, someone hears it, likes it, burns it, and maybe it will catch on. But if its only for listening purposes in the computer, well, that's where its gonna stay. I Like Exposure and will do what ever I can to get it. Even if its giving away FREE music.
Music has a unique way of resurfacing, reaping that in mind what do you feel will make a resurgence in the 21st century and why? How do you decide what material will be released on your projects? I go with the topics that will create controversy, and I'm good at writing things like that, LOL. Touch me All Over was and is a great song. But hasn't got much attention until recently. I was at FreestyleFile.com Saturday night (Freestyle Internet radio) and I actually heard someone request it. That blew my mind! So, I guess that song is starting to pick up!.
Prior to going to the studio do you have a sense of what you will do with certain projects? Yes, I always prepare how it will sound mentally. If I can not visualize it, I will not do it. It will have to wait.
What motivates you to continue doing music? The positive feedback. And my large fan base.
What do you think about the Freestyle genre? I love the music, but record executives aren't trying to touch the word "Freestyle". I think with this being a new millenium, it should evolve (the name) call it something like "New School Dance" something that will give chance to record execs. to listen to but not under the name Freestyle, even though we all know and love "Freestyle".
Where do you see yourself in the future? Well, I hope to get into bigger and better things. I have been looked at in the past by 3 major companies, but because of my former manager, I lost out on all offers. I do however have my own writers publishing company now through ASCAP, so maybe I'll consider song writing as a profession, who knows? LOL
What would you like to tell your fans? Just to be on alert, as of today, The release date for "Boy Next Door" (The Remix Album) is set for Tuesday, April 9th, 2002. Keep an eye and ear out for it. And don't forget to visit my website at www.BylliREMIXED.8k.com
