There are a few elite artists that have always remained in the mind of many. These artists are considered to be trend setters that helped in molding the Latin Hiphop Culture. Their music will remain as an inspirational mark in our Freestyle Music history. SHE's BACK !!! YES, Nocera. (Summertime, Summertime) |
One of the most requested artist on FMC, Nocera joins
forces with Gregg Fine and John Roggie to form the group VOS (Voice Of The Satellites). No one can forget her two Freestyle classics. Her first release "Summertime Summertime" sold 250,000 copies and went to #1 in the dance and top 40 pop charts. Her second release, "Let's Go, also made it to the dance, pop, and R&B charts, and gave her the opportunity to work with producers like Floyd Fisher, Little Louie Vega, Mantronik and Todd Terry. |

Their music is an infectious
blend of groovy and spiritual "Poptronica". Nocera is the songwriter and
vocalist of the group.Gregg Fine and John Roggie program and produce the music using
computers, samplers, synths, drum machines, and live guitars. "Voice of the
Satellites" is currently performing throughout the New York City area with a full
seven-piece band including live drummer, percussionist, bassist, and background vocalists. When asked about her early inspirations, Nocera said, "Music has been part of me ever since I can remember. I began learning different instruments, like the flute and guitar, at age 5. |
I've been writing songs and poems since I was 10,
drawing inspiration from my first idols, the Beatles and Elton John. I remember thinking
at the time: This is my future- music! I've been hooked ever since!" VOS unique style of jazzed up alternative rhythms will have you in a state of unconsciousness. Not a Freestyle oriented project like so many would have loved to hear again from Nocera, but a step up to the major players in the mainstream. A perfect add for radio. ****4-stars For more information on VOS check out http://www.voiceofthesatellites.com. VOS is also getting a lot of great feedback via their page on MP3.com, http://www.mp3.com/vos . |
Hot off the press the new Threesome CD single on BLFY. This three song CD includes two lovely voices, who have lent their talent to many Bobby Leal recordings. As well as a new 2001 mix of "For You" by Bobby Leal. A must have for you Freestyle headz. The "For You" 2001 remix by Bobby Leal, a West Coast flavor of moog style basslines and a pumping Cybroton "Clear" beat, a guaranteed jam. This man is always hard at work bringing us hot new tracks. We can't forget the sweet melodic backup vocals of Soleil, which is also featured on track 3, "Pleasure and Pain", this time as the main vocalist. This track is more of an Old School flavor reminiscent of the NYC Freestyle sound, with a Miami style melody riff. PLAY IT!!! Track two "All Night Long" by Daniell Martinez is a new school track, sort of a La Rissa type progressive Freestyle sound. This song can easily become one of the new club anthems of today, with it's tweaking melodies and pumping club beats. *****5-Stars "Giving you a little New Skool, Old School and Classic Bobby Leal". |
It's a rise in the new millenium for the Filipino artists representing strong!!! April a 14 year old singing sensation who hails from the state of Washington, releases her debut album "Touch The Sky" on Kamikaze Records. Her tracks are full of hiphop, R&B vibes that will have all dancefloors pouring out the soul. One of my favorite tracks is "Caught A Crush (On You)", a mix of hiphop, Freestyle swinging beats slowed to an R&B pace, and dynamic vocal performance. April will sure catch the attention of the music industry. Look for April to become one of the new, top teen artists of today.**** 4-Stars | For more info check out: www.kamikazerecords.com |

Letters from the community:
Hey it's Jeff,
Going over something of the answer that you guy have up on the question part it made me think. The planet rock beat has been play out but that what freestyle started as. The producers need to develop some young superstar in freestyle to represent them in the world who would get the world attention. Freestyle rap has to go so far the songs I listen to are weak. The producers need to be more creative,be original, get artist expose on tv, radio, show, etc. Also it is hard to get freestyle music in store and you have to order from the net that suck. Some of the remix on most songs don't even sound original. On your website I got 3 of the CDs and the rest I just saw. The artist that really Iike to listen to are steve B, collage, Lil Suzy, Coro, and Spanish Fly. To be honest some of the artists I have no clue to what they look like until I came here. Not to bad mouth anyone but the new Cynthia songs is that even freestyle anymore and also Rockell is she going to stay with freestyle or not?
Freestyle got to evolve and make some music video. Thank you for your time but a frustrated freestyle fan.
Sincerely,
Jeff
A Little Latin Hiphop History by: Glenis V. Bradford
The year was 1982 the place The Castle in the Bronx in New York, the club music culture was in full speed. Groups like Freeze, Third World, Rick James, Mary Jane Girls, were dominating the charts. Disco evolved into club music and becoming more Electro funk oriented. We were witnessing a type of rebirth of the earlier funky drum culture that predated disco. This new urban street culture was enhanced by a powerful radio station known as Disco 92 KTU, whom played the favorite hits. The Hiphop culture was in is infancy.
I grew up attending Skate Fever, the roller-skate club owned by Sal Abbetiello of the famous Fever, which was the cradle of Hiphop music. Here I nearly lost some of my body parts trying to learn how to skate, but I never did. Then to make a long story short 1983-84 came, and the place was Paul Park and the club was the Crackers Club. This was Lisa Lisa's and Full Force debut year along with Madonna's early dominance in the club scene, with her hit "Into The Groove" from the movie soundtrack. This was the early stage of Latin Hiphop, with a dance called the loft (a form of breakdance like movements which came from the early version of the kick dance that everyone remembers), and the webo dance, which was a form of a dance competition or a sex war dance.
I remember this being real fun, talking about fun this reminds me of the Devil's Nest, the official cradle of Freestyle music. Were I lived in 1985, I saw all the early acts like The Cover Girls, Information Society, Expose, you name it. I myself was sore liked a sideshow along with a sizeable among of the usual patron. If you don't know, this was the era when Breakdancing ruled the dance world. Along with this came new Freestyle type of dances like the new wave, among others. Like the music that once was gone, but not forgotten.
